What this office does

The county coroner is an elected county officer created by the Indiana Constitution. The coroner investigates deaths that occur in the county under the circumstances set out in state law and determines the cause, manner and mechanism of death [1, 2].

The job in full — the duties the Indiana Code puts in it, the term, what it pays and who sets that, and what to ask a candidate.

Term
4 years [1]
Term limit
No more than eight years in any twelve-year period (Indiana Constitution, Article 6, Section 2) [1]
Qualifications
Must have lived in the county for at least one year before the election, be registered to vote in the county by the filing deadline, and file a statement of economic interests [3]
Pay and staff
Set by the county council, which also fixes the number of deputies and employees; the officer files a budget estimate each summer [4, 5]
On the 2026 ballot
22 counties; 3 contested (more candidates, including write-ins, than seats) [6]
What the law puts in this job (3)
  • Investigates deaths reported to the office, determines the cause, manner and mechanism of death, and signs the verdict and report [2, 7].
  • Controls autopsy records under state law [7].
  • Must complete training required by the coroners training board; the commissioners withhold pay if training is not certified [8].

What has changed in this job lately

Changes in the law the next officeholder will work under, most distant first.

  1. July 2026

HEA 1031 took effect. A coroner or deputy without the required training may not conduct a death investigation or sign a death certificate, and a county whose coroner misses training deadlines must reimburse the coroners training board [8].

Measured, for this county

These are health context figures, not a measure of the coroner's work. A position compares this county with counties of similar size. It is not a grade: for most measures a higher or lower number is neither good nor bad on its own.
