What the law puts in this job

  • Performs the assessing duties of IC 6-1.1 in the township; exists only where the township had 15,000+ parcels on Jan. 1, 2008 and voters disapproved transferring the duties to the county assessor. [1, 2]

What the officeholder decides

  • Annual adjustments and reassessment work within the county plan; SEA 270 township mergers do not affect the township assessor office. [5, 6]

Who the officeholder answers to

  • Voters; the county assessor equalizes countywide; DLGF approves ratio studies. [4]

What it pays, and who sets that

  • Appropriated under IC 36-6-8; incremental pay based on certification level. [3]
  • Varies; not compiled.

Questions worth asking a candidate

Ours, not a questionnaire anyone answered. They come from what the job actually involves.

  • What is your certification level?
  • How do your township's ratio-study results compare with the rest of the county?
